Three new coins for 21st century Comoros

The latest coin of the Comoro Islands

For much of the first half the 20th century, the coins of nearby Madagascar were used in Comoros. Also in common with the Madagascans the Comoriens had a name of there own for the 5 Franc unit and this name was “Riali” relating back to (Spanish) Reales. The names the Madagascans gave to their 1 and 2 Franc coins are explained on the Madagascar page of this site. The Comoriens were a little less accurate than the Madagascan with their choice of words of the 1 Franc coins and the 2 Franc coins. The Comoriens would call a “1 Franc” coin a “rubu” meaning a “quarter” (of a Riali) which of course equates to 1.25 Francs and they would call a “2 Franc” coin a “nusu” meaning a “half” (of a Riali) which of course equates to 2.5 Francs. It is a long time though since any coin less than 5 Francs could buy much at all.
The most recent coins of the Comoros that I know of is this coin - the 100 Francs of 1999.

Comoros 100 Francs 1999
Comoros' latest type 100 Francs 1999, at 200dpi.

It is as per 100 Franc coin of 1977 (KM-13) but is in the name of central bank. Notice that the design includes the inscription "Augumentons la production alimentaire", which is French for "Let's increase food production". This food production related slogan is all to do with this being an F.A.O. coin. No other 1999 coins of Comoros are known to have been issued nor of 2000.
The F.A.O. is the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations. There are a few hundred world coin types relating to various F.A.O. themes/programs, quite a number of these designs include the letters “F.A.O.”. For more information on F.A.O. coins of Africa and the world see  Juan's World FAO Coins .

Quite a lot of the Comorien information throughout this page was from Iain Walker. Thank you Iain. I left out any history of these islands etc.. as this is fully covered on Iain’s site Coins of the Comoro Islands . Iain’s site covers all you should ever need to know about these coins and has a section "Banknotes of the Comoro Islands" which is still under construction.
