Privy Marks
Forgetting the privy marks put on precious metal coins by the Pobjoy Mint,
there are a few that appear on more normal coins and these are of relevance
to the above information.
-
The coins of the circulation types of 1979 (year of the Millennium of Tynwald)
have on them a small stylised triskelion in addition to the dieletters. There
are one pound coins (KM-44) of 1979 which have on them the small stylised
triskelion privy mark AND two small crossed oars, in the place where one
would expect to find the dieletters. So this piece has two "privy marks".
The crossed oars on these pieces are the only privy marks to be found in
exactly the same position as one would normally have found dieletters.
A dealer's advertisement from 1979 states that the crossed oars relate
to the "Henley Regatta".The 1982 coins appear to have either dieletters
OR the "Baby Crib" privy mark (relating to the Royal Birth). No pieces
have been seen with both of these features.
-
The coins of the circulation types of 1985 (year of ?sport?) have on them
a small symbol in addition to the dieletters.
-
The uncirculated two pound coin of 1986 (KM-167) has a "Viking ship in
wreath" privy mark and no dieletters. What is to be found on the Proof
versions of the piece - I am not too sure.
Some "odd" pieces I have...
